EUROPE'S TOP EDUCATION APP BY COUNTRY IN 2026:
DUOLINGO OWNS ALMOST THE WHOLE MAP

Across Europe in 2026, one education app shows up as #1 again and again, to the point where the “map” almost stops being a map. Using AppMagic’s top charts, Duolingo ranks as the top education app in 22 of the 23 countries in this list, with just one market breaking the pattern.

The exception is Hungary, where Speak & Learn English: Learna takes the top spot. But rather than changing the overall story, it highlights just how unusual it is to see a different leader in a category so heavily dominated by a single app.

When a single app wins across so many markets, it usually means two things are true at the same time: the product is strong, and the category definition is narrow in the app stores. In practice, “education” as a store category often becomes shorthand for “learning something on your phone in small daily sessions,” and Duolingo fits that perfectly.

WHY DUOLINGO TRAVELS SO WELL

ACROSS COUNTRIES

Duolingo’s advantage isn’t tied to one culture or one school system. It’s built around a format that works almost anywhere:

You understand the value instantly: learn a language.

You can start in seconds: pick a language, do a quick lesson, get feedback.

It’s built for habit, not homework: short sessions, progress streaks, frequent rewards.

It feels light, even when you’re consistent: people don’t download it expecting a serious course, they download it expecting something they can keep up with.

That matters because a lot of education apps struggle with drop-off. People have good intentions, but if the first session feels like effort, they quit. Duolingo’s whole setup is designed to reduce that friction and make “just one more” feel easy.

WHAT THIS SUGGESTS ABOUT THE EDUCATION

CATEGORY IN 2026

Seeing Duolingo dominate almost every market in this list doesn't mean other learning apps aren't popular; it means Duolingo has become the default choice when people search for "education."

Students who want a boost,

Adults who want a practical skill,

Travelers who want basics,

Anyone who just wants a daily routine that feels productive.

Hungary's exception is also a useful reminder that category leadership is never completely fixed. Even in one of the most concentrated categories in this series, alternative products can still take the #1 spot in specific markets.

The core insight is about positioning: in mobile education, the winning products are often the ones that make learning feel like a simple daily loop, not a big commitment.
