Exceeding 110 million downloads, ChatGPT's mobile app has achieved close to $30 million in revenue
In a remarkable journey since its web launch on November 30, 2022, ChatGPT's native mobile version made its debut on iOS, followed by a Google Play release two months later. As the chatbot marks its first birthday, the mobile apps have collectively achieved an impressive $28.6 million in global consumer spending, driven by the popularity of its relatively high-priced monthly subscription, ChatGPT Plus.
ChatGPT Plus, the sole in-app purchase, boasts a recurring subscription priced at $19.99 per month in the US. Despite surpassing the pricing of many music and streaming services, the platform has demonstrated substantial value, reflected in soaring consumer spending as ChatGPT Plus continues to introduce new features and exclusive content for its subscribers.
The Google Play release experienced a record-breaking weekly adoption of around 18 million new installs during its first week. While this exceptional uptake hasn't been replicated, combined iOS and Android downloads have steadily risen, consistently exceeding 4 million for the past five weeks.
Over the approximately six months since the iOS version's debut, ChatGPT has firmly established itself among the top in terms of downloads, consumer spending, and user engagement. India claims the largest share of ChatGPT's 110 million installs at 18%, slightly ahead of the United States at 17.5%.
In cumulative consumer spend to date, ChatGPT secures a robust second position, outpaced only by Ask AI from Codeway, which launched a few months prior. Unlike ChatGPT's mobile offering, Ask
AI provides users with various lower-priced in-app purchases for premium features, available in two tiers—premium and elite.
Regarding total sessions, reflecting user engagement, ChatGPT ranks third behind Chai and Character AI. This aligns with the focus of higher-ranked apps on interacting with multiple fictional characters in AI-powered chats, fostering a higher number of sessions overall. However, this landscape may undergo a shift as ChatGPT introduces its array of multiple personalities with special-purpose GPTs designed to assist with specific tasks.
In the third quarter of 2023, ChatGBT secured the second most downloaded app worldwide across both the App Store and Google Play. Significantly, it claimed the second spot in pivotal markets such as the United States, India, and Germany, marking a notable achievement in the competitive landscape of mobile applications.
