Monopoly GO generates $2 billion in revenue, with less than a quarter spent on user acquisition

Scopely's blockbuster hit Monopoly GO has achieved yet another remarkable milestone, surpassing $2 billion in revenue in a mere 10 months since its launch in 2023. What's even more impressive is that the game's revenue doubled from $1 billion to $2 billion in less than half the time it took to reach the initial billion, demonstrating unprecedented momentum and growth. With each lap of the board completed in just three months, Monopoly GO has set a new record as the fastest-grossing mobile game in history.

Scopely co-CEO Javier Ferreira expressed his awe at the game's trajectory, describing it as "extraordinary" and praising the exceptional level of community engagement. Monopoly GO's retention rates have far exceeded expectations, showcasing the enduring appeal and stickiness of the gameplay experience.

Currently boasting over eight million daily players, Monopoly GO commands over 70% of Scopely's total daily playerbase across its entire portfolio. This monumental achievement underscores the success of the game, which is the culmination of seven years of development efforts dedicated to creating a mobile Monopoly sensation.

While Monopoly's iconic IP undoubtedly contributed to its success, Scopely's Senior Vice President of Marketing, Jamie Berger, emphasized that IP alone does not guarantee success. Instead, it is the game's compelling gameplay and social strengths that have propelled it to stardom.

Despite its phenomenal success, Monopoly GO has faced scrutiny regarding its user acquisition strategy. While rumors suggested massive behind-the-scenes investments, Ferreira revealed that "less than a quarter of lifetime revenue" has been spent on marketing. Although still a substantial sum, this allocation underscores Scopely's strategic approach to investing in the game's expansion.

Reflecting on the game's development journey, Ferreira acknowledged the challenges and uncertainties faced along the way. From a small team in Los Angeles to a global collaboration involving over 150 game developers from various countries, Monopoly GO underwent numerous iterations before evolving into the worldwide phenomenon it is today.
