June's Journey Achieves Historic $1 Billion Revenue, Setting a Milestone in German Gaming
Wooga, the Berlin-based subsidiary of Playtika, has achieved a momentous milestone with its flagship game, June’s Journey, crossing the impressive $1 billion revenue mark. Notably, this makes June’s Journey the first German mobile game to achieve such revenues in just over six years, debuting in October 2017. The game also holds the distinction of being the highest-grossing hidden object game on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
Wooga attributes the success of June’s Journey to strategic engagement tactics that specifically target the often-overlooked mature female audience, constituting a substantial portion of the game's player base, with 90% of dedicated players being women. Nai Chang, Wooga's managing director, emphasized the company's remarkable journey, highlighting their strategic focus on developing story-driven casual games, setting a precedent in the gaming industry.
Chang stated, "It’s not just about the genre; our exceptionally diverse workforce also plays a crucial role. We believe innovation thrives when diverse perspectives join to create compelling gaming experiences for a range of players." Playtika's Chief Revenue Officer, Ofer Kinberg, praised Wooga's dedication and passion, emphasizing the alignment with Playtika's vision of creating exceptional gaming experiences.
Wooga, founded in 2009 and acquired by Playtika in 2018, has seen a significant surge in June’s Journey's popularity, reaching the $500 million milestone just one year ago and doubling this figure since then. The $1 billion revenue milestone includes earnings from in-app purchases and ad revenues. In an interview about June’s Journey’s success, Chang highlighted the integral role of player engagement, emphasizing the importance of "getting attached to characters."
