Lightspeed Studios acquires developer Lucid Games
Tencent's subsidiary, Lightspeed Studios, has made an undisclosed acquisition of Lucid Games, a renowned developer based in Liverpool, as reported by Gamedeveloper.com.
Lucid Games gained fame for its thrilling vehicular combat game, Destruction AllStars, available on the PS5. The studio's expertise has also contributed to hit titles like Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
In a recent tweet, Lucid Games assured its followers that despite the acquisition, it will maintain its independence in creating games and operating the studio. However, it will benefit from the support of Lightspeed Studios' global network and advanced technology capabilities.
The gaming industry continues to witness a shift towards multiple platforms. While mobile gaming leads in terms of revenue and market reach, many developers are diversifying their presence across consoles and PCs to maximize revenue streams and attract new audiences.
Lightspeed Studios, known for co-developing successful titles like PUBG Mobile and Apex Legends Mobile, may be indicating a strategic move into console and PC development with the acquisition of Lucid Games. This partnership might also lead to Lucid exploring more opportunities in the mobile gaming space, leveraging Lightspeed's expertise.
It's interesting to note the existing connections between the two studios. Lucid Games is set to support Tencent-owned Inflexion Games' upcoming title Nightingale, and they have previously collaborated on projects with Electronic Arts, a prominent player in the mobile gaming industry. While Lucid hasn't ventured into mobile gaming yet, it's plausible that they may venture into this space, given the current trend of top talent being drawn towards the mobile gaming sector.
